Just wanted to let you guys know....

Times are changing, music is changing, the internet is changing, but the music industry is remaining
static. By this, I mean the battle between copyright advocates and pirates is still in full swing, and music blogs such as this one are being targeted for copyright infringement. I've been reprimanded by Blogger / Google several times for uploading copyrighted material for you to download. Because of this, I've been strong-armed into posting only YouTube videos and links. However, the plan is to continue releasing mixtapes with my favorite songs, and in the next couple months, have my own independently hosted website. In the meantime, continue listening to these tunes, tell your friends, download the mixtapes, and wait for the real site.

I'm sorry. I often hate on contemporary mainstream music, but Iyaz's "Replay" is just so damn catchy. Combine that with the mega-hit "Kids" as remixed by Chiddy Bang, and you have too much catchiness for one song. Listen to this once and you'll be instantly hooked. If you're not, you probably have good taste in music.

This site is free (ish), legal, and worth a look. If you make an account you can stream entire albums for free. Awesome.

In the meantime, you NEED to listen to this song. Kick back for a good twenty minutes; do some homework, read a book, and LISTEN to this song. This album completely changed jazz. The first time I heard this song, I almost fell out of my seat. It's that good. Just be sure to listen to the whole thing. It can be daunting. Check it out.

     K'naan, born Keinan Abdi Warsame is a Somali-Canadian musician and rapper. K'naan, means "traveler" in the Somali language. He spent the early years of his life avoiding death and listening to the hip-hop records sent to him from America by his father, who had left Somalia earlier.
   I actually got a chance to see K'naan open up for Matisyahu last summer. He has an amazing, warm presence and plays with a djembe drum on stage. His band is great, and he, for the most part, proclaims a message of peace and love, such as this track "Wavin` Flag."
     Check this out and let me know if you dig K'naan. I hope you do.

Hyperdub To The Rescue

      Over the years, London-based record label Hyperdub brought some of the best in dubstep from artists such as Benga, Burial and Kode9. Burial's Untrue garnered some of the best reviews of 2008. Joker is the latest from the quiet, enigamtic label.
     He shies away from calling his music garage or grime, yet his music is hard, intense, and some of the best to come out in the past year.
     Joker is only eighteen years old. He's about to embark on his own North American tour (hitting up Portland at the Holoscene, 21+)
     Joker has constantly been in my rotation lately and deserves to be shared. If you're into hard electronic music and / or dubstep, Joker is for you. Check out his highly rated single "Digidesign" from 2009.

In other news, the Sasquatch 2010 lineup is incredible. You should seriously consider going, it should be a great time.

And apparently Kanye West has started recording a new album. According to Drake, it should be great. According to Kanye, he (West) is the next Maya Angelou of our generation. So he might name the album "Good Ass Job".
Kanye, i'mma let you finish, but that might end up being the worst album title of the year. And the year just started.

Internet radio can provide some of the freshest, most groovy tunes you haven't heard before, and it's very customizable. You can choose to listen to rock, metal, hip-hop, dance...really anything you want. Instead of being forced to listen to radio stations in your car that are controlled by major corporations and record companies, listen to what you want.

Soma Fm: broadcasting out of San Francisco, Soma Fm is "14 unique channels of listener-supported, commercial-free, underground/alternative radio. Our mission is to expose great new music to people who otherwise may never encounter it. " Soma Fm is run completely on listener donation, and remains today one of the largest independent internet radio outfits. The channels vary in genre, but a good number of them are dance/electronica/chill. This is a really good station to study to. This station runs like a podcast through your media player, such as Winamp or I-tunes.

Radio IO: "What radioIO isn’t: Corporate, consulted, random, limited, formulaic, set to “shuffle,” restrictive, biased, cooler than you." Radio IO is internet radio that plays handmade playlists by real humans! Each station is unique, and somewhat tailored to listener requests. "In addition to building you these focused yet expansive music channels, we love to interact with you: playing your requests, answering your questions, and finding out about more great music right along with you." This station plays through a pop up internet window.

Pandora: This internet radio is really, really awesome. You type in a song you like, or a band you like, and Pandora only plays songs and bands that sound like your entry. This radio provider is an excellent way to find new artists. You can build an account, and bookmark your favorite songs and artists to review later. This is probably one of, if not the best internet radio outfit.

One Day

I'm currently doing a remix of Matisyahu's song "One Day", which was selected as the anthem for the 2010 Winter Olympics. I'll post up what i've got so far, and then you can give it a listen, dissect it, tell me what you think.

In other news, the Jason Webley / Vagabond Opera show on the 19th was great. If you haven't had a chance to check out either of these powerhouse acts, you should get on that right now.

Here's a few albums I've been kicking around the last few days:

Air: Love 2

Honestly, if you're a fan of downtempo, chilled electronica and you haven't heard this yet, you're missing out big time. While not Moon Safari by any stretch, it stands alone as a great pop-synth album that is easily consumable by mostly anyone. Please, please listen to this.

St. Vincent: Actor

Indie rock guitarist Annie Clark (Berklee graduate) delivers an awesome, eclectic, and somewhat mysterious sound on Actor. Haunting, beautiful, and fresh. Check out this record.

Andy McKee: Art of Motion

If you don't know who this guy is, check out this video. An entire album of this somewhat pretentious guitar playing is infinitely relaxing, harmonious and beautiful. I listen to this when I can't sleep.

Devotchka: How It Ends

Gypsy folk / punk / rock. Similar to acts such as Jason Webley or The Dresden Dolls, but with less of a novelty feel and more emphasis on powerful songs. Check out this band on youtube or something, they have a really cool eastern european sound.

Del Tha Funkee Homosapien: I Wish My Brother George Was Here

One of the best underground hip-hop albums ever. Ever. There are some masterpieces on this record (Mistadobolina) and it shouldn't be missed by anyone. Even if you don't like hip-hop. Get this.

The album is coming along. I'm starting to finish some tracks, but there's still so much to do. Stay tuned for the remix of "One Day".

I've decided to switch a few things up.

The deadline for winter term is to have every creative piece of the album written. This includes sketches, full songs, ideas, riffs, everything that I'm actually going to use. The subsequent term will be dedicated to polishing, refining, and producing the record. As always, I welcome and appreciate your help and feedback. Hello World:

I've decided to start and complete an album during winter term. Thats from Jan. 4 to March 15th. I've decided to blog the entire experience and project. I'll be uploading samples and rough sketches for people to check out. I'd like to work with several people on the project, and if you'd like to be a part of it, let me know. Otherwise, I'll be cranking away every day for the next three months until I've got something worth showing. Here's some ideas I've got so far;

- A cover of Michael Bauer's "Six Months". Ideally, I'd like to get several friends of his to sing on the track
- Some dance tracks, perhaps one feat. Chilly Willy
- The usual strange, electronic prog-rock
- An acoustic cover of "My Girls".
- Definitely a cover of a Lady Gaga song. I have a crush.

At this point, the strategy is to make as much music as possible so at the end, I can pick and choose the best tracks. At the end, I'd like to be able to perform the entire thing. If you'd like to help me put together a little concert and perform, lets get started on that too. This thing could potentially be a lot of fun.

So here we go. Day 1. Please, please check back often and tell me what you think. I'd love your support (or even your scathing criticism). I want to make this interactive.
